History, Information, and Value of 1865 Gold Liberty Double Eagle
Value of 1865 $20 Gold Coin
The 1865 $20 double eagle issue features an average strike overall, with softness to Libertys hair curls evident on some of the non-shipwreck examples. The surfaces are typically very clean for the type, with attractive, frosty luster that extends to the shipwreck coins, as well. Winter notes the existence of a few semi-prooflike examples, though these are usually marred by abrasions. Circulated examples of this Philadelphia mint issue are available with little effort. Over 300 examples were recovered from the wreck of the SS Republic, distributed mostly across AU and Mint State grades. About 300 strictly Uncirculated pieces are thought to exist, the finest of which is a single MS-66 (NGC). Six to eight Proof pieces are known, though certified population figures are dramatically inflated by resubmissions.
