History, Information, and Value of 1868 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1868 $20 Double Eagle

This is one of the better produced double eagles of the Type 2 Liberty Head design; the typical high grade example is sharply struck with vibrant frosty or semi-prooflike luster. Surfaces are usually abraded, sometime heavily so, but the 1868 double eagle is a bit easier to locate with a relatively smooth appearance than the 1866 or 1867. As the limited mintage might imply, the 1868 among the scarcest Type 2 Liberty Head double eagles. Most survivors are circulated, typically VF or EF in quality, with only the occasional AU appearing on the market. This is a very rare issue in Mint State, the finest known example grading MS-63 at PCGS. The Proof 1868 is very rare, as well, with only 10 to 12 survivors from a paltry mintage of 25 pieces.
