History, Information, and Value of 1877 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1877 $20 Double Eagle

As with most Type 3 Liberty Head double eagle issues, the 1877 double eagle is well struck with most examples boldly to sharply defined. A few pieces are lightly struck on the hair curls below Libertys coronet _ a minor feature. Roughly handled in commercial channels, this issue is known for heavily abraded surfaces, and even many high grade examples show deep marks on one or both sides. Luster quality for the 1877 is excellent and generally frosty in nature. Popular as the first Philadelphia Mint Liberty Head double eagle of the Type 3 design, the 1877 is readily obtainable in all grades from VF through MS-62, although its smaller mintage makes it scarce relative to common date issues of this type. In MS-63 the 1877 is rare, and it is all but unknown any finer. Proofs of this date are major rarities; no more than half of the mintage of 20 coins is believed to have survived to the present day.
