History, Information, and Value of 1877-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle
Value of 1877-S $20 Double Eagle
Striking quality for this issue is usually adequate, although seldom full, and many examples will display softness of detail to the high points of Libertys portrait and/or the obverse stars. Most survivors are liberally abraded. The high grade pieces that retain appreciable luster often display a satin or frosty texture. As the generous mintage might imply, the 1877-S double eagle is readily obtainable in circulated grades. A couple of thousand Mint State examples are also known, although most are confined to lower grades through MS-62. In Choice Uncirculated the 1877-S is very scarce and seldom offered, while in Gem Mint State it is a major condition rarity. The finest certified pieces are graded MS-65, one of which traces its provenance to the Saddle Ridge Hoard discovered in Northern California in 2013.
