This is a well struck issue characterized by bold to sharp definition throughout the design. Luster quality for the 1878 double eagle is also excellent with most pieces either satiny or frosty in texture. As with all early Type 3 Liberty Head double eagle issues, the 1878 is very challenging to locate without extensively abraded surfaces. Circulated examples of this issue are plentiful in all grades through AU, and the 1878 is also obtainable with relative ease in the MS-60 to MS-62 grade range. Choice Uncirculated survivors are scarce, however, and most such pieces grade MS-63. The finest certified examples are MS-64. The 1878 is one of the rarest Proof double eagles of the Type 3 Liberty Head design with fewer than 10 examples believed extant.
