The 1878-S double eagle is often softly struck over the high points of Liberty’s portrait and around the peripheries on both sides, although the lack of detail is minor and the overall appearance of the typical example is suitably bold. High grade survivors have good luster, typically of a satin or frosty nature. Heavily abraded surfaces are a problem for this issue at all grade levels. The 1878-S double eagle is readily obtainable in all grades from VF to MS-62, although it is very rare any finer. The highest graded example known to the major certification services is an NGC MS-64.
