Most examples are sharply struck, moderately to heavily abraded and, in high grades, pleasingly lustrous with a satin or frosty texture. The 1879-CC double eagle is similar in overall and high grade rarity to the 1878-CC, which means that it is scarce in circulated grades through AU-53 and rare to very rare any finer. Mint State examples are particularly elusive; among the finest certified is a PCGS MS-62 that appeared at auction in August 2012 as part of Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ sale of the Battle Born Collection of Carson City Mint Coinage.
