History, Information, and Value of 1880 Stella Flowing Hair $4 Gold
Value of 1880 Flowing Hair $4 Stella
Produced in a similar manner to the other four-dollar gold Stellas, the 1880 Flowing Hair Stella is sharply struck in all areas save for over the central high points, where striations are usually present from Mint personnel shaving half eagle planchets for striking these coins. Most survivors exhibit predominantly smooth surfaces and are brilliant or display cameo contrast between satiny devices and mirrored fields.
Like the 1879 Coiled Hair and 1880 Coiled Hair, the 1880 Flowing Hair Stella was struck in small numbers for clandestine distribution to a few contemporary numismatists and others with close ties to Mint personnel. The exact number made is unknown, but with only 15 to 20 specimens extant the mintage is likely on the order of 25 examples. With only a couple of exceptions survivors are Choice or Gem. A few of the finest pieces have been certified Proof-67 Cameo by PCGS or NGC.
