History, Information, and Value of 1884 Morgan Dollar
Value of 1884 Morgan Silver Dollar
As one may expect, 1884 Morgan Silver Dollars are readily available as the Philadelphia Mint issued them in great quantity. Large releases from government vaults occurred in the 1940s through the 1960s. Quality varies greatly, from sharp and lustrous to dull and grainy. Surviving Proofs of the date are fairly plentiful and available to all who desire an example though some patience will be needed to find just the right coin. Look for a sharply struck specimen with solid cameo contrast.
$1 Coin May Be Hard to Find After Silver Melting: EF and AU pieces are available with regularity though coins of lesser grades often head to the melting pot in times of high silver prices.
UNC Examples are Easy to Find and a Great Addition To Any Collection: As might be expected from the high production tally of the date, just about any Mint State grade is available to today’s collectors. A pleasing MS-64 example of the date will prove satisfactory for most collectors, but look for a sharply struck coin with good luster to maximize your collections’ worth.
The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1884.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
