The 1888-O Morgan Silver Dollar is available in all circulated and Mint State grades. Like many of its sister New Orleans issues, the 1888-O Morgan dribbled out of government storage and into the coin market in 1946 and into the 1950s. Many more 1888-O silver dollars were released from a long-stored cache from a vault at the Philadelphia Mint in the early 1960s. Striking and luster are often far below par, but it is possible to find an attractive example by taking some time to search. The strike can range from flat to sharp, with most coins showing weakness at the center observe and center reverse. Luster can be grainy to dull, but some can be found that are frosty and attractive. No proofs were produced since this was a branch mint.

If Searching for High Grades $1 Coins, Also Look for Strike Quality: A plentiful date in virtually every Mint State grade. We like MS-64 although the date should be cherrypicked for strength of strike and lively, frosty luster if you want the search to be worth your time.

The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
