The 1889-O Morgan Silver Dollar was struck in large quantities and millions of coins were likely released into circulation in the 19th century, with others stored as part of Treasury holdings and released over a period of many years. Worn grades of the 1889 New Orleans mint are common. Coins in Mint State are plentiful, but the sharply struck gems with very attractive luster are harder to find. Circulation strikes are usually lightly struck in at the centers. When seen, prooflike coins are well struck and often have a cameo contrast. However, no actual proofs were produced at the New Orleans Mint.
1889-O $1 Silver Coin is an Easy Find in Today’s Market: Readily available in a wide range of grades from well-worn VG or so right up to AU, the date presents no difficulty in these grades.
Tough to Find Higher Grades of the 1889-O Morgan: In the 1930s the Treasury was paying out Mint State bags to any and all takers. By the time of the Treasury releases in the early 1960s, few bags of the date remained. Gems are not easily located but can be found with patience. Look for an MS-64 with a bold strike and lively luster and your search will be worth.

The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1889.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar; O.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
