History, Information, and Value of 1890 Gold Liberty Double Eagle
Value of 1890 $20 Double Eagle
Most 1890 double eagles are sharply struck with liberally abraded surfaces. Some of the Mint State coins are redeemed by excellent frosty luster, although there are exceptions that are somewhat subdued with a more satin texture. Although far from being the most common Type 3 Liberty Head double eagle, enough 1890 double eagles are extant that one should have little difficulty acquiring an example in AU or lower Mint State grades. Well-worn survivors are actually quite scarce, and in grades of MS-63 and higher this is a scarce to rare issue. The finest certified examples grade MS-66 and MS-65+ at NGC and PCGS, respectively. In Proof format the 1890 double eagle is rare with fewer than 20 specimens known, probably just 14 to 16 coins.
