History, Information, and Value of 1893 Morgan Dollar

Value of 1893-O Morgan Silver Dollar

The New Orleans Mint produced its lowest mintage figure of any of its Morgan dollars with the 1893-O Morgan Silver Dollar. As a result, examples in circulated grades are fairly scarce, and quite elusive to very rare in higher Mint State grades. Strike quality is usually below average. Sometimes a single coin can show a sharp strike on the reverse and a lighter one on the reverse. With some exceptions, luster is usually lacking. The New Orleans mint did not produce any proof examples of the 1893-O Morgan Silver Dollar coin.
Expect Circulated Coins for the 1893-O to Be Difficult: Available but not common in any grade with EF and AU pieces especially elusive. A challenging date to those working on circulated Morgan dollar sets.
If You Find High Grades, Hold On to Those Gems: This date is frequently found peppered with contact marks in Uncirculated grades and is most often found at MS-60 to 63. MS-64 pieces are rare and finer than that is not often encountered. Look for a boldly struck MS-63 specimen with frosty luster and you’ll own a coin that is worth far more than you paid.

The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1893.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar; O.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
