This is a sharply struck, lustrous issue that, although typically offered moderately to heavily abraded, is one of the easier double eagles from the 1890s to locate with smooth surfaces relative to the assigned grade. Obtainable with ease in grades up to and including MS-64, the 1897 double eagle is rare any finer. The highest graded example known to the major certification services is an MS-65+ listed at PCGS. Although a bit rarer than the preceding issue with no more than 40 coins believed extant, the 1897 still ranks among the more frequently encountered Proof double eagles from the 1890s.
