With a sharp strike and excellent satin or frosty luster, the typical Mint State 1903 double eagle is among the most attractive examples of the Type 3 Liberty Head design. Relatively smooth examples are known, as well, although most survivors are moderately to heavily abraded from commercial use. Thanks to the repatriation of large numbers of coins from overseas hoards, the 1903 is obtainable with ease in both circulated grades and in Mint State through MS-65. There are a few examples in higher grades, however, the finest known to PCGS and NGC certified MS-66. With 158 coins struck the 1903 has the highest mintage of any Proof Liberty Head double eagle, and it is one of the most frequently encountered dates of the type. Even so, survivors number no more than 60 or 70 specimens.
