Value of 1905-S $20 Double Eagle

Isolated softness of detail around the obverse periphery and/or near the central reverse notwithstanding, the typical 1905-S double eagle is overall boldly struck. Luster quality is good with Mint State survivors often displaying a satin or frosty finish. Most examples are noticeably abraded irrespective of grade. This is one of the scarcer San Francisco Mint double eagles from the 20th century, although in an absolute sense the 1905-S is plentiful enough in grades through MS-64 to satisfy numismatic demand. Higher grade examples are rare, however; the finest certified is a single MS-67 listed at PCGS.
