Value of 1909/8 St. Gaudens $20 Gold
There are two significant varieties known of this date, the 1909/8 St. Gaudens and the 1909 normal date. The overdate usually has minor lack of detail to the high points of Libertys portrait, although the typical Mint State survivor is lustrous with either a satin or frosty texture. Most examples possess significant surface abrasions.
As the only overdate in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, the 1909/8 enjoys strong collector demand at all grade levels. Although the mintage of this issue seems to have been fairly evenly split between the 1909/8 and the 1909 normal date, the overdate is a bit more plentiful in todays market. This variety is scarce, yet obtainable in grades through MS-63. Near-Gems in MS-64 are very scarce while Gems are nothing short of rare. Neither PCGS nor NGC has certified an example finer than MS-66.
