Most examples are boldly struck, although on a few exceptions the detail along the lower left obverse border is incomplete. Luster is strong on the 1913-S with the typical Uncirculated survivor displaying pleasing satin or softly frosted texture. Scattered abrasions are the norm.
The popular 1913-S St. Gaudens has the second lowest mintage among Type 3 Saint-Gaudens double eagles after the 1908-S. It is one of the scarcer issues of this type in Mint State, with most examples grading no finer than MS-64. Gems are rare, seldom offered, and in great demand among advanced gold collectors. A solitary PCGS MS-66 is the finest certified for this date and mintmark.
