This is a sharply struck double eagle with most examples displaying bold to full detail. Luster is typically excellent, often of the frosty type, and usually with marked granularity. Thanks to the relatively large number of Gems extant the 1915-S St. Gaudens is one of the easier pre-1920 double eagles of this type to locate with minimally abraded surfaces. Even so, the typically example is moderately to heavily marked.
The 1915-S is readily obtainable in grades through MS-65. In MS-66, although scarce, it is encountered on fairly regularly on the market in any given year. In higher grades the 1915-S is very rare, the top ranking in the certified population being occupied by a single NGC MS-67.
