This is a sharply struck and highly lustrous issue. While a few exceptionally well preserved examples are known, most 1929 St. Gaudens double eagles are moderately to heavily abraded.
The 1929 inaugurates a run of key date Saint-Gaudens double eagles that continues through the series end in 1933. This date is much rarer than the generous mintage might imply. The culprit, once again, is the wholesale destruction of undistributed examples on government order during the late 1930s. Only a small percentage of the mintage seems to have been exported, and only a few hundred survived to be repatriated. The 1929 is scarce to rare in all grades and is typically encountered in MS-60 to MS-64. Gems are rare, the finest certified being a single PCGS MS-66+.
