History, Information, and Value of 1934 Peace Dollar

Value of 1934 Peace Silver Dollar

Production of Peace dollars resumed in 1934 after a six-year hiatus. The Silver Purchase Act of 1934 required the Mint to purchase domestically produced silver at a price higher than the commercial market value as in the depths of the Depression the commodity’s value had slipped to historic lows. The act stimulated silver production and some of it was used to mint silver dollars. The 1934 Peace Dollar is one of just four dates in the design type with a mintage that fell below one million coins. The Philadelphia Mint produced Peace dollars of good quality this year, with solid strikes and good luster. This year’s issue can be found in high Mint State grades at a cost that should be within reach.
Small Premiums Are Added to 1934 Peace Dollars: EF and AU examples are readily found in dealer stocks at coin shows though they seldom show up in mixed circulated dollar lots. They will expect more than silver melt.
High Grade 1934 Silver Dollars Exist In Large Quantities: The date is plentiful enough in MS-64 and MS-65 that you should have no trouble locating a coin at either grade. Even MS-66 examples exist though they are highly elusive and no doubt costly. The price of MS-64 or MS-65 for this date today may seem like a bargain tomorrow. Choose carefully and select a well-struck and lustrous specimen for the ultimate in satisfaction.

The obverse text on the Peace Dollar reads “Liberty; In God We Trvst (Trust); 1934.” The reverse text on the silver dollar reads “United States of America; E Pluribus Unum; One Dollar; Peace.” The obverse of the coin has a bust of a female facing the left with a pointed crown and flowing hair. The reverse of the Peace Dollar has an eagle sitting on a rock in the center with rays in the background.
