The Annual Assay medal for 1976 was an oval medal and displayed Treasury Secretary William Simon on the obverse. Simon faces three-quarters to the left and wears a suit, tie, and glasses. The legend reads, “Annual Assay Commission; William Simon Secretary Of The Treasury. Mary Brooks Director Of The Mint”. The reverse displays the famous image of Washington crossing the icy Delaware River as painted by Emmanuel Leutze. The legend reads, “Independence Bicentennial 1776-1976″ and in exergue, ” Washington Crossing the Delaware”. The final public Assay Commission was held in 1976.
