W-1 | Original, Large Berries, Proof | C-PO-4, B-1a | Breen dies: 1-A. | Struck in 1843 for inclusion in Proof sets and as single units for collectors. Possibly 25 to 35 examples are thought to exist. The obverse die was used for all three varieties of the date.

W-2 | First Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-5, B-2 | Breen dies: 1-B. | It is believed that somewhere between 30 and 35 examples exist of the variety. Slight doubling at NT in CENT. Some examples of 1843 Braided Hair Half Cent W-2 have high wire rim details; the early Mint called these rims “fins.”
Value of 1843 C-SR-20 Braided Hair Half Cent
W-3 | Second Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-20, B-3 | Breen dies: 1-C. | Only seven to nine or so examples are extant of this rarity. As with earlier Second Restrike Proof half cents of the decade, some examples of this variety are found on heavy planchets with an average weight of 96.1 grains; these form a minority and are avidly collected by advanced half cent specialists.
