History, Information, and Value of 1856-O Gold Liberty Double Eagle
Value of 1856-O $20 Gold Coin
This date is the rarest New Orleans Mint double eagle, with a mintage of only 2,250 pieces. The most prominent regions of Libertys hair on the obverse are often found softly struck, with the reverse remaining generally sharp. The small production run instilled a prooflike luster to virtually all examples, though this is often obscured by heavy abrasions. Today, the 1856-O $20 double eagle remains a classic Liberty Head double eagle rarity. Just 30 to 40 survivors of this issue are known, including a number of pieces plagued by damage, cleaning and other problems. Most of the population is heavily worn in grades ranging from VF to EF, with 8 or so pieces in AU condition. The only know Uncirculated 1856-O $20 is a piece graded Specimen-63 by NGC that can be traced back directly to the New Orleans Mint.
