History, Information, and Value of 1872-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1872-S $20 Double Eagle

This is one of the less well defined San Francisco Mint double eagles of the Type 2 Liberty Head design. While the reverse is usually bold, the obverse often shows incomplete detail to the high points of Liberty’s portrait and some of the stars. Luster is also inferior with even high grade pieces displaying subdued surfaces. As well, the typical 1872-S double eagle is extensively abraded from commercial use. In general, this is one of the more challenging Type 2 Liberty Head double eagles to locate with strong eye appeal. Although readily obtainable in all circulated grades, the 1872-S is scarce in lower Mint State grades through MS-61 and rare any finer. The finest certified example grades MS-64 at NGC.
