Die preparation was the same as for the 1907 Arabic Numerals, and the typical 1908 No Motto St. Gaudens will also display softness of detail to the center of Libertys portrait and/or the eagles leg feathers. Survivors are almost always lustrous, either satiny or frosty. With such a large number of high grade survivors to choose from the collector should have little difficulty locating a smooth and attractive example.
This is not only the most plentiful No Motto Saint-Gaudens double eagle, but it is also one of the most common issues in this series as a whole. Examples are very common in all Mint State grades through MS-66 and, thanks to the remarkable Wells Fargo Hoard that entered the market in 1997-1998, even Superb Gems in MS-67 are offered for sale on a fairly regular basis. There is even a sizeable population of coins certified MS-68 by PCGS and NGC. The finest Wells Fargo Hoard examples have been graded MS-69 by the former service. Only a handful of MS-69s are known and they are generally in tightly held collections.
