Both striking and luster quality are excellent for this issue, with examples displaying either a satin or softly frosted texture. This is one of the easier early date Saint-Gaudens double eagles to locate with relatively smooth surfaces, but even so most Uncirculated survivors are moderately to heavily abraded.
The 1911-D St. Gaudens is readily obtainable in all grades up to including MS-66, with coins in the MS-60 to MS-65 range very common. The major third party certification services have graded a number of Superb Gems in MS-67 and MS-67+.
