This is not one of the better produced double eagles of its era and the typical example is somewhat softly defined over the high points of Libertys portrait. Luster quality is also below average with many pieces softly frosted in texture, yet also quite granular. Since most Mint State survivors are moderately to heavily abraded, it is important to search for an example with superior quality and eye appeal.
Although the 1913 St. Gaudens is one of the scarcer early date Saint-Gaudens double eagles, buyers should have little difficult locating one in the MS-60 to MS-64 grade range. Gems are very rare, however, the finest certified being an NGC MS-66. The 1913 is one of the rarer Sand Blast Proof Saint-Gaudens double eagles, comparable to the 1909 and 1914, and survivors number just 40 to 45 coins.
